Fifteen minutes later, Katie walked into the interview room where Driver was waiting.

He'd recovered somewhat from his short ordeal at her hands, although he was still stooped over, and had a graze on his cheek.

"What was that about?" he asked in tones that told her he was feeling sorry for himself. Now that the bully had been bested, he was resorting to self-pity.

"Next time, cooperate with the police," Katie told him shortly. She didn't have time for idiots who thought they could take the law into their own hands.

"What do you want from me?" he asked sullenly.

"We had a victim of abduction end up in the hospital at Winnipeg. She was found on the highway a few hours’ drive north. She got away from the man who’d taken her. She spoke the word ‘Driver’. So we're following up on people with that name in the area, who have a record. Such as yourself," Katie explained.

His eyes flew wide. He looked horrified and afraid. "A woman was abducted?" he yelped. "I don’t know nothing about that. I swear it, I wouldn’t do something like that."

"She mentioned the name ‘Driver’," Katie said.

"It wasn’t me, seriously!" he protested. "Please tell me you believe me. I don’t want to end up framed for something I never did."

He was practically pleading with Katie. He seemed afraid that he was in real trouble now.

"What were your movements yesterday? I want an account of where you were, and when," Katie pressured him. She needed to know if he would have had any window of opportunity to take Sherrie.

He looked upset. "I worked from eight to five. My day job."

"Doing what?"

"I work for a removals company. I deliver stuff. Furniture, white goods, that sort of thing."

"Were you on the road yesterday?"

"Yesterday, we were doing a job within town. In The Pas. Here’s the address details, on my phone. But I didn't do the driving. I went along with one of the other guys to help lift and carry, for an office move from downtown to the suburbs. We began at eight, and were done just before seven p.m. I called my manager to tell him we were knocking off. Here’s the call I made."

"And then?"

"Then I went to the bar. I can confirm I was there last night until they closed at eleven. I played a few games of pool. Bought food and drinks. Used my card. I'll show you the slips, I think they are still in my wallet."

With hands now shaking, he fumbled in the wallet and produced a crumpled paper. He unfolded it, and Katie saw the credit card slips from the bar. Katie took them, scanned them briefly. He'd been there, all right.

“Okay,” Katie said.

"I'm not the kind of guy who would do something like that," he explained. "I'm sorry I gave you a hard time."

Reluctantly, Katie saw she would have to rule out this witness. He did have a confirmed alibi and his time when Sherrie had been taken was accounted for. He wasn't entirely innocent and was a troublemaker for sure.
